SkillsTech leads the green way
Recognising that experienced tradespeople need skills in sustainable work practices, trade training specialists SkillsTech Australia have developed a new program in consultation with industry.
The Vocational Graduate Certificate in Master Trade Applications - Sustainability Projects, uses mentoring and online learning to give participants the skills to research, plan and implement sustainability practices in their workplaces.
Workplace sustainability projects undertaken as part of the training include renewable technology projects, reuse of waste heat, water management, lifecycle analysis, carbon reduction strategies sustainable processes and ISO 14001 programs.
SkillsTech Australia lecturer Dr Vikki Uhlmann said the program was a great opportunity for organisations to address environmental challenges, while giving employees the opportunity to gain a highly regarded master trades qualification.
"Employees suited to this qualification will be building on existing high-level technical skills and knowledge," Dr Uhlmann said.
"The Vocational Graduate Certificate will give employees the confidence and skills to make significant, high level, independent judgements in planning, design, implementation and review of projects."
SkillsTech Australia has worked with a steering committee of industry skills councils, including the Building Services Authority, Construction Skills Queensland and Energy Skills Queensland to oversee the development of the sustainability training program.
The qualification is part of the Trade Honours Program funded by the Australian Government, under the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations Alternative Pathways Initiative.
