Qld gears up for WorldSkills competition

Qld gears up for WorldSkills competitionMore than 10,000 tonnes of equipment and tools will be moved into the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre for the WorldSkills Australia National Competition in May.

Organisers are busy preparing a thousand work benches, eight tonnes of steel, 16 cars, 12 car bodies, eight truck motors, two large trucks and enough bricks to build two houses. In addition, there will be nearly 100 hairdressing mannequins, 400 kilograms of flour and 750 eggs brought in for the three-day event.

These are just some of the materials required by the 500 competitors at this year's WorldSkills Australia National Competition.

With competitions to be held across 50 skill categories - from cabinet making to carpentry, beauty therapy to baking, web design to welding - organising equipment and materials is one of the major tasks for event organisers.

In 2008, approximately $12 million worth of equipment and materials was required to stage the national competition in Sydney. This year, resources will come from national sponsors as well as Queensland companies looking to get involved in the biggest skills competition in the nation. Queensland companies can support the national event through supplying equipment or materials for the category competitions.

With more than 100 volunteers needed to manage the competition, employers and workers are also encouraged to participate as judges, convenors, mentors, trainers or volunteers.

A full list of the national competition categories is available on the WorldSkills website.

Companies looking to support the WorldSkills Australia National Competition through equipment, materials or volunteers can email Catherine Huntley, WorldSkills Australia Sponsorship Coordinator, or phone 03 9249 1000.
