Adventure Activity Standards released in Qld

Adventure Activity Standards released in QLDOutdoors Queensland has released the Queensland Adventure Activity Standards (AAS).

The Standards are minimum, voluntary guidelines for organisations conducting outdoor recreation activities where the participants are dependant on the activity provider.

The AAS were developed to promote: 

  • safety for both participants and providers
  • understanding of the minimum requirements for running quality, accountable adventure activities
  • knowledge for industry, public consumers, insurers and the legal system.

The AAS are NOT statutory standards by law. In Queensland, legal liability for injuries or property damage is primarily governed by the law of Contract and Negligence which are described within each AAS introduction.

Rather, the AAS have been established as guidelines to minimum standards and responsibilities. This was achieved by engaging in consultation across the outdoor industry so that a single and consistent set of guidelines could be established and agreed by the contributors. The result is this first version of the AAS providing information for stakeholders of safe and sustainable practices in the outdoors.

The AAS provide an opportunity for those who lead and participate in outdoor activities to have an opportunity to be appropriately informed of the responsibilities, duty of care and legal expectations they should meet. Further, the Standards help to guide knowledge of the appropriate duty of care required for self, others and the environment.
