Fire protection licensing transition arrangements
To assist the fire protection industry change to the new Qualified Persons Licences under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995, Fire Protection Association Australia is issuing a temporary licence.
The Regulations take in Fire Protection Service Technicians who handle ozone depleting or synthetic greenhouse gas (ODS & SGG) extinguishing agents. The temporary Experienced Persons Licence allows technicians time to demonstrate competence in the skills and knowledge required under the Regulations.
The licence provides pathways for fire protection technicians to have their skills and knowledge assessed or recognised against national units of competency set down to grant a Qualified Persons Licence for licence categories 1 and 4.
Learning and assessment resources for licence categories 1 and 4 have recently been finalised. These resources will help a gradual rollout of Qualified Persons Licences to holders of categories 1 and 4 licences.
Technicians can complete each unit as a training course, apply for recognition of prior learning (RPL) or complete the process through a combination of the two.
Table 322 of the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995 outlines the relevant units of competency for each licence categories.
The new Qualified Persons Licences are to be phased in gradually, to minimise any possible disruption to industry. Experienced Persons Licence in categories 1 and/or 4 with a 12 month period in which to acquire a Qualified Persons Licence (from their current licence expiry date).
