Skillaroos ride high in Calgary
Australia's Skillaroos have returned home from the International WorldSkills Competition in Calgary, Canada with a haul of 12 medals.
The Skillaroos placed fifth in the world with the team made up of 26 apprentices, trainees and vocational education and training students aged 23 and under from a range of industry areas who were medallists in the 2008 Australian National WorldSkills Competition.
Heh-Nian (James) Sun was awarded the Gold Medal in Restaurant Service and Jessie-Lee Gladwell received Gold in Beauty Care. Jessie-Lee was also awarded the Best of the Nation Award.
Five Skillaroos received Silver Medals and another five were awarded Bronze Medals in the event which was held from 1-7 September.
The WorldSkills competition represents 51 member countries and regions worldwide and was established in 1950, with Australia competing in every competition since 1988.
The results of the 2009 International WorldSkills Competition sees Australia retain its ranking of fifth in the world.
The Australian Government is providing $750,000 a year in funding to WorldSkills Australia for three years and is committed to training more top quality WorldSkills competitors.
