Safe Work Australia legislation passed

The Safe Work Australia legislation is now law, allowing for the creation of Safe Work Australia, the new national body to lead and improve occupational health and safety (OHS) and workers' compensation arrangements in Australia.

The creation of Safe Work Australia is an important step towards achieving harmonised occupational health and safety laws across Australia.

Harmonised OHS laws are essential to the Rudd Government's aim of a streamline national economy to drive productivity in the future.

The Government is working co-operatively with all jurisdictions to develop uniform, equitable and effective safety standards and protections for all Australians by December 2011, 12 months earlier than originally planned. 

Safe Work Australia will be an independent statutory authority comprising of an independent chair as well as representatives of the Commonwealth, each State and Territory, employers and unions.
