Pilot competency training system explained
![]()
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has published guidance material to explain the competency based training and assessment system in place in Australia to ensure qualified and experienced pilots.
Competency based training and assessment is the way in which pilots achieve the specified standards for licences, ratings and endorsements.
All flight instructors, approved testing officers and flight training examiners will find the new guidance material extremely valuable. The material will also help student and existing pilots in preparing for assessments.
The aim of the Civil Aviation Advisory Publication is to help people using the competency based training and assessment system to better understand and apply the concepts of the system.
The advisory publication explains what competency based training and assessment is, what is meant by competency standards, the tools used in training and assessment and how assessment works.
There is an emphasis on assessment in the material, as there is already advice on training in publications such as the flight instructor manuals. The new advisory publication says: "the cornerstone of a competency based training and assessment system is rigorous and objective assessment of the trainee against valid standards". This means teaching methods may vary between training organisations but trainees must meet a consistent and appropriate standard.
