Fair Trading Highlights tightened Qld SecurityThe Queensland Office of Fair Trading has issued a reminder to the real estate industry about the licensing requirements of security equipment installers.

Minister for Fair Trading Peter Lawlor said changes to the Security Providers Act, made late last year, meant that installers of equipment such as electronic alarms would need to be licensed security providers.

'Installers such as locksmiths will also need to be licensed if they are working on locks used in non-residential premises, such as commercial premises and the common property within a building complex,' Mr Lawlor said.

'A person who holds a licence has passed the probity standards set by the Act to ensure known criminals are not placed in positions of trust within the security industry.

'I encourage all business owners to review their list of tradesmen and handymen who provide security related services to ensure they are correctly licensed.

Mr Lawlor said that real estate agents and body corporate managers who engaged unlicensed security installers could be hit with heavy penalties.

'Real estate agents and resident letting agents are entrusted to manage commercial and residential properties, including building complexes, and they have a responsibility to ensure the person installing or servicing the security systems in those premises is licensed.

'Those caught using unlicensed security providers could face fines of up to $50,000.

'These changes provide stronger regulation of the security industry and ensure consumers and businesses can choose appropriately licensed installers for their security needs.

'Installers of basic security items such as portable safes, security screens and locks used in homes do not need to hold a licence,' Mr Lawlor said.

To assist consumers and businesses select a licensed security provider, the Office of Fair Trading has launched a free online service which allow users of security services to check if a person or company holds the appreciate licence.
