National VET Sector Sustainability Policy and Action Plan
The National VET Sector Sustainability Policy and Action Plan 2009-2012 was endorsed by the Ministerial Council for Vocational and Technical Education (MCVTE) at its meeting on 12 June 2009.
The purpose of the Policy and Action Plan is to provide a national framework for the VET sector to support the development of a productive workforce as industry, government, individuals and the wider community move to a sustainable economy.
The plan outlines a number of actions to equip learners, industry, training organisations and other VET sector stakeholders with the skills and knowledge to support the drive towards an environmentally sustainable future.
The National VET Sector Sustainability Policy and Action Plan has been collaboratively developed by the Commonwealth, and States and Territories in consultation with vocational education and training (VET) stakeholders from industry, government, community, education and other sectors.
The National VET Sector Sustainability Policy and Action Plan aligns with the Council of Australian Governments' agendas on Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation, and Participation and Productivity.
The Policy and Action Plan includes four key result areas for progressing environmental sustainability, each supported by a suite of actions (24 in all) for VET stakeholders to implement individually and collaboratively. These four key result areas for sustainability in VET include:
- building a workforce skilled for sustainability: ensuring that individuals, industries, VET professionals, and the wider community have access to relevant knowledge and skills for sustainability
- providing VET system products and services that support skills for sustainability: ensuring VET products and services have incorporated sustainability competencies, and training providers have the capabilities to deliver and assess the skills for sustainability
- encouraging adoption of sustainability values, principles, and practices by VET leaders, partners and champions: valuing and supporting approaches and strategies for advancing the sustainability agenda and outcomes through VET
- reducing the VET sector carbon footprint: VET sector and its stakeholders living sustainably and walking the talk of sustainability across all facets of their operations.
