Decision allows school-based electrical apprenticeships in SA
Teenagers have won the right to commence electrical and refrigeration apprenticeships while still at school in South Australia, following a recent decision handed down in the South Australian Industrial Relations Commission.
A case was heard in the Industrial Relations Commission in January and went to trial in March to allow an Adelaide secondary school student to begin his career in the electrical trade while completing his secondary education.
The case went to the commission because the state-based industrial award did not allow the school-based apprenticeships to occur because of safety concerns.
The decision formally opens up a new pathway into a career in the electrical industry for young workers. The Commission's decision means young workers who are seeking a career in electrical or refrigeration trades can now enter their chosen industry on a part time basis while still at school.
