New marriage celebrant qualification

The Attorney-General's Department is advising of new training requirements for people wishing to be registered as a marriage celebrant under the Commonwealth Marriage Celebrants Program.

The CHC08 Community Services Training Package includes the new Certificate IV in Celebrancy CHC42608 which replaces the old CHC41502 Certificate IV in Marriage Celebrancy.

This means the minimum training requirement for registration as a marriage celebrant will be increased to the full Certificate IV in Celebrancy. The new training requirement will become mandatory 12 months from the release date of the new training package.

Accordingly, from 3 February 2010, people who wish to be registered as a marriage celebrant under the Commonwealth Marriage Celebrants Program will have to possess, at the minimum, the CHC42608 Certificate IV in Celebrancy, before they can apply to the Attorney-General's Department for registration.

The commencement date has been selected as a reasonable period of time for students to complete current studies and for providers to prepare for and obtain approval to deliver the new qualification. The new requirements will be reflected in amendments to the Marriage Regulations Act 1963.

The Attorney-General's Department will work with state and territory registering authorities and registered training organisations throughout the transition to the new qualification.

The Department will respond to email enquiries sent to marriagecelebrantssection@ag.gov.au (messages should be marked for the attention of the CHC08 Implementation Team).
