National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme

The Outdoor Council of Australia (OCA) is advising that in 2009 it is continuing the development and implementation of the National Outdoor Leader Registration Scheme (NOLRS).

The scheme is part of the OCAs commitment to a registration based recognition scheme for outdoor leaders.

In 2009 the OCA will conduct the following major initiatives:

  1. The re-establishment of a new national NOLRS sub-committee to oversee the development and implementation agenda
  2. Expansion of the activity specialisations available for registration to include:
    1. Snorkelling
    2. Abseiling Natural Surfaces Multi Pitch
    3. Horse Trail Riding
    4. Canoeing / Kayaking
    5. Trail Bike Riding
    6. Rock Climbing
    7. Four Wheel Driving
    8. Mountain Biking
    9. Surfing
    10. Rafting
    11. Caving
    12. Canyoning
    13. Climbing Artificial Surfaces.
  3. Development of training and assessment functions for each of the new activity specialisations including the development of Partnered Assessment Provider courses. The Outdoor Council of Australia has engaged Outdoors WA to complete most of the training and assessment development work.

One of the aims of NOLRS is for the required competencies of outdoor leaders to be based on those in the Outdoor Recreation Training Package. It is hoped that once finalised, all states will then have the option of incorporating a registration pathway into their Adventure Activity Standards.
