Consultation on development of radiation protection and safety units

Government Skills Australia is leading consultations to incorporate units of competency covering radiation protection and safety into a national training package.

Draft units have been developed covering a range of roles from radiation workers to radiation safety officers on industrial sites.

These units are available for review and comment through the Government Skills Australia Training Package Feedback Register (login required).

Consultation/validation forums are being held in Mackay, Perth and Melbourne during February 2009. Forums have already been held in Sydney and Adelaide.

Specifically the consultation is covering:

  • bore hole logging
  • safe handling, storage and transportation of radiation sources
  • uranium and mineral sands mining
  • radiation safety officers
  • awareness for those working with and around radiation sources.

Non-ionising radiation is not included in this consultation. Those working in clinical areas will not be covered specifically though there may be generic areas of interest.

The outcomes of these consultations will be submitted to the Radiation Health Committee of the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency.
