Aviation operators warned over appropriate licences and qualifications

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is advising air operators and maintenance organisations to make sure their pilots and licensed aircraft maintenance engineers are appropriately qualified.

This follows a recent court case where a person pleaded guilty to conducting aircraft maintenance without holding the appropriate licence. Aviation organisations are required to make sure only qualified pilots and licensed maintenance personnel carry out duties that require licences.

The Civil Aviation Regulations require organisations to check the qualifications of their personnel and CASA can ask for evidence to be provided of qualifications and competence. This means it is important for both maintenance organisations and air operators to have systems that keep track of on-going personnel qualifications and competence.

Pilots and maintenance licence holders also need to be aware of the privileges attached to their licence and the time for which these are valid. They must not carry out duties that requires a licence if their qualifications are not valid.

Organisations concerned about the validity of a licence should contact CASA's personnel licensing sections. Confidential reports of unlicensed operations should be made to CASA's Industry Complaints Commissioner.
