Agreement on national regulation for pilot and escort vehicles
Australia's Transport Ministers have unanimously agreed to develop national regulations for pilot and escort vehicles.
Oversize vehicles play an important role in moving houses, large machinery and equipment. Because of their size, and potential hazard to road users, the trucks must be accompanied by accredited pilot or escort vehicles.
An administrative guideline for pilot and escort vehicle driver accreditation, approved by governments in 2004, aimed to align different state and territory schemes and procedures.
A National Transport Council (NTC) effectiveness review has found that the guideline has not delivered mutual recognition.
NTC Chief Executive Nick Dimopoulos said that industry complains that wide loads can be forced to wait at state or territory borders until an approved 'new' pilot or escort crew arrives to continue their journey
'The national guideline has failed to fix the regulatory headache for operators,' he says.
