New training requirements for SA building contractors and supervisors
![]() |
New training requirements have been approved in South Australia for building work contactors and supervisors following a review of the requirements under the Building Work Contractors Act 1995.
Two new units of competency from the Certificate IV in Building and Construction (Building) (BCG40106) have been approved as satisfying the business qualifications requirements to be granted a building work contracting licence under the Act.
The units, which are from the General Construction Training Package (BCG03), are:
- BCGBC4009A Apply legal requirements to building and construction projects
- BSBSBM406A Manage finances.
Any contractor or supervisor applicant who provides the Office of Consumer and Business Affairs (OCBA) with a Statement of Attainment issued by a registered training organisation (RTO) with the approved qualifications/units on its scope of registration will be recognised by the OCBA.
Completion of these units is an additional option to the currently recognised qualifications and experience requirements under the Act.
In addition, new experience requirements have also been approved, depending on the type of building work supervisor registration being applied for.
An 'Experience Log' can be completed by prospective building work supervisor applicants. This 'log' will enable applicants to demonstrate to the OCBA that they have achieved a certain level of supervisory experience with respect to certain building work.
At this stage the new training requirements for supervisor applicants are not mandatory, but rather they are an alternative to the other currently approved qualifications/experience requirements. In other words, the OCBA can still interview supervisor applicants who do not hold formal qualifications or if there is uncertainty about their experience.
However, new the training requirements may become compulsory once the OCBA is satisfied that RTOs are successfully delivering training for the new qualifications for new building work supervisor applicants. The completion of the 'Experience Log' will become critical if the qualifications eventually form a mandatory training requirement for supervisors.
