Building surveyors licence recognition arrangements
![]() |
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS) have announced agreement on recognition arrangements for the Building Surveyors (Level 1) Licence.
In respect of obtaining a Building Surveyors (Level 1) Licence in Australia, where the AIBS is the accrediting body to assess educational qualifications, both bodies have agreed on the following:
- RICS members who hold the 'Chartered Building Control Surveyor' designation will meet the requirements to be awarded a Building Surveyors (Level 1) Licence after demonstrating 12 months of building control surveying experience in Australia.
- RICS members who hold the 'Chartered Building Control Surveyor' designation with less than 12 months practice in Australia can be assessed by the AIBS. However, those members must be able to demonstrate competence in the Building Code of Australia and local planning legislation and practice.
- RICS members who hold the 'Chartered Building Surveyor' designation who have relevant experience and professional development/qualifications in building control surveying will be assessed by AIBS on their specific training and experience. Alternatively those members with the Chartered Building Surveyor designation may wish to apply to RICS to be assessed for the 'Chartered Building Control Surveyor' designation and then follow the above process for gaining the Level 1 Licence.
Further work is currently being undertaken by the AIBS and the RICS to compare and agree a process for RICS Technical Members (TechRICS) who qualified in the RICS Building Control Faculty, to obtain the Level 2 Licence.
