Victoria use technology to target unlicensed traders
Using information technology to detect unlicensed motor car traders has led Consumer Affairs Victoria to successfully prosecute two cases this year.
A computerised program analyses the frequency of advertisements in relevant publications, such as newspapers and magazines. It sorts advertisements by telephone numbers contained within the text and alerts Consumer Affairs Victoria to potential targets offering multiple vehicles for sale.
Data from the program is analysed with information from other sources about suspected unlicensed motor car traders.
This process identified 19 potential unlicensed motor car traders during the financial year ended 30 June 2008. Each advertised more than 10 vehicles for sale during the year.
