National Toy Safety Summit - Brisbane

A one day national toy summit will be held in Brisbane on 10 September 2008. The summit will see industry, government and consumer groups come together and develop a roadmap to improve the safety of toys, wherever they are from and wherever they are sold.

The summit will aim to:

  • set a clear direction from government to industry on improving safety of toys
  • develop a systemic approach to toy safety which will result in regulators working more cooperatively to reduce the risk of unsafe toys entering the marketplace
  • use the experiences of 2007 (e.g. global recalls, re-emergence of lead in toys, the ongoing issues with magnets in toys, questions over the adequacy of current standards) as a basis for a long term action plan to improve the overall safe supply and safe use of toys
  • improve marketplace surveillance and coordination to expedite the rate of removal of unsafe toys
  • identify ways to engage better with overseas regulators to reduce the risk of unsafe products being imported into Australia
  • improve consumer awareness of toy safety
  • develop strategies to work more cooperatively and proactively with industry to reduce the risk of unsafe toys entering the marketplace.
