Ministers confirm joint vision for education and technology

A high level Commonwealth announcement has endorsed the vital role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the national training system.

The Joint Ministerial Statement on Information and Communications Technologies in Australian Education and Training: 2008-2011 was endorsed by the Commonwealth ministers for education and training, through the Ministerial Council on Education, Employment, Training and Youth Affairs (MCEETYA) and the Ministerial Council for Vocational and Technical Education (MCVTE), last month.

It is a national vision for the integration of ICT into teaching and learning, to improve the quality and standard of education and training for all Australians.

The statement commits ministers of education and training to:

  • National collaboration across Australian education and training jurisdictions and sectors to share resources and expertise, and to leverage existing initiatives while recognising the importance of innovation and experimentation.
  • National, cross jurisdictional and cross sectoral approaches through the Australian ICT in Education Committee (AICTEC) to address the ICT enablers of technology rich learning environments.

In line with the increased focus on ICT in education and training, the ministers for education and training, through MCEETYA and MCVTE, have also endorsed the Charter of Principles for Cross-Sectoral Collaboration on Interoperability across the Australian Education and Training Sectors.

These principles will guide processes and policies for interoperability at national, jurisdictional and organisational levels.
