Training provided for newly arrived migrants

Adult Multicultural Education Services (AMES) is providing training for refugees and newly arrived migrants in Victoria through its Social Enterprise Program. The program, which has conducted its first graduation ceremony, provides a non-threatening environment for people to develop English language and business skills, acquire accredited training and participate more fully in their new community.

The program was created to provide support for people wanting to work, but facing barriers to employment. It is comprised of four elements, including language and literacy support, job search assistance, real work experience placements and accredited training. Training courses offered through the social enterprise program include qualifications in hospitality, business administration, food safety and horticulture.

Since 2004, the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development has funded AMES, the Brotherhood of St Laurence, Social Firms of Australia and a range of community organisations to develop enterprises as a way of building skills and creating job opportunities for Victorians facing barriers to employment.
