CPD changes come into effect for NSW builders and swimming pool builders
![]() |
In Edition 47 of Licensing Line News, we reported on changes to the continuing professional development (CPD) requirements for New South Wales builders and swimming pool builders.
In 2006, an evaluation of CPD in the New South Wales home building industry recommended changes. These changes came into effect on 1 January 2008, meaning that CPD now operates on a simple points system. Individuals licensed as builders or swimming pool builders under the Home Building Act 1989 are required to undertake CPD activities to make up 12 points per year.
It should be noted that the previous 25 point system is still in place for builders and pool builders until:
- the date a one year licence is renewed in 2008
- the first anniversary of the date a three-year licence was taken out in 2007.
After this, builders and swimming pool builders are required to comply with the new 12 point CPD system.
Information regarding the 12 point CPD system can be found at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/building (Select 'Builders & tradespeople' > 'Continuing Professional Development 2008')
The New South Wales Office of Fair Trading is delivering a free two-hour seminar at various locations during 2008. The seminar is relevant to the CPD topic of Compliance and will cover key aspects of the Home Building Act 1989 as well as the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal Act 2001. Builders and swimming pool builders attending the seminar will earn two CPD points (or four points under the old system).
Information on the seminars can be found at www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/building (Select 'Builders & tradespeople' > 'Free seminars for licensees'.)
