Marine training centre a step closer for Cairns

The feasibility of establishing a new world-class international marine skills centre is being examined as part of a new $55,000, two-month Queensland Government-funded study.

The study, by Cairns-based consultancy The 20/20 Group, will examine the benefits of creating a marine skills centre similar to the already established Cairns Aviation Skills Centre.

If successful, the centre would provide a one-stop-shop for marine industry training from entry to advanced level in a custom-built facility. It would aim to attract students from across Australia and the Asia Pacific region, as well as promote growth and address current skills shortages in the marine industry.

The Australian Marine Training Network - Cairns is a strong advocate of the centre and the concept is supported by industry, civic and community leaders.

The Queensland Department of Education, Training and the Arts is providing $35,000 towards the study, with the Queensland Department of Tourism, Regional Development and Industry providing $20,000.
