ACT apprentices say training is the right choice

A recently released survey, What Do ACT Apprentices Think?, shows Australian Capital Territory apprentices are happy with the quality of their training.

The survey was carried out during 2006. More than 730 apprentices took part, representing the automotive, building and construction, primary industry, tourism and hospitality, food processing and sales and personal services sectors.

95 per cent of apprentices surveyed said they'd made the right decision in starting their apprenticeship and 70 per cent planned to continue working or studying in an occupation related to their apprenticeship after they qualified.

The results of the survey will be shared with registered training organisations and employers to help them understand the apprenticeship experience and how this could be improved, including the blending of off the job training and workplace experience.

More young people are starting and completing apprenticeships and traineeships in the ACT than in any other part of the country. Statistics from the National Centre for Vocational Educational Research show a 10 per cent rise in the amount of training started, compared with just a one per cent increase nationally.

There has also been a 16 per cent rise in the number of apprentices and trainees who have finished their vocational education and training qualifications in the ACT, compared with four per cent nationally.
