ACT appoints new Occupational Health and Safety Council

The Australian Capital Territory Government has appointment a new Occupational Health and Safety Council, established under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1989. It will be chaired by Mr Don McCallum, who currently represents the interest of ACT public sector employers on the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Council.

The 13-member council, which includes representatives of employees and employers, plays a central role in connecting the ACT Government to the community in relation to work safety and workers compensation.

The council has been integral in the ongoing review of the OHS Act and the passage of recent legislative amendments. Building on this work, a completely new OHS Act will be introduced into the ACT Legislative Assembly in 2008.

The ACT Government regards the critical success factor in improving safety in the workplace as being active participation and involvement by businesses and their employees, whose personal safety and viability depends on quality, safe work practices.
