Mining simulators boost training in Queensland's resources industry
After trialling several interactive mining machinery simulators in 2006, the Mining Industry Skills Centre has purchased 18 mining simulators and is developing the Simulator Training Centre in Mackay to help overcome the current skills shortage in the resources sector.
Through video headsets, simulators offer a virtual experience in operating machines such as excavators and continuous miners. They cover both surface and underground mining machines, including loaders, draglines, longwall shearers and continuous miners, as well as haul trucks, wheel loaders and dozers, helping to develop and upgrade the technical, safety and health skills of mine employees
Surface and underground mines in Queensland and New South Wales, and quarries in Queensland have shown considerable interest in using the simulators to train workers. They are currently located at the Construction Training Centre in Brisbane and the Coppabella coal mine in Central Queensland. Three simulators will be trailer-mounted and fully mobile by the end of 2007.
Mining is a hazardous industry and the simulators can also be used to train mining employees to deal with emergencies and crises in a controlled and safe environment. The Mining Industry Skills Centre, the Queensland Mines Rescue Service and the Department of Mines and Energy are working together to develop mines rescue simulations. While the concept is in the early stages, it offers great potential.
