Training for safe Australian skies

Safety in Australian skies will be enhanced through a new aviation threat and error management training course for passenger and general aviation operations.

The Australian Government, through the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, has contributed $250,000 to enable the Australian Regional Office of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators to develop a course for improving safety threat and error management skills in the Australian aviation sector.

Australia has an excellent air safety record, but things can go wrong inflight. The course will help pilots with effectively identifiying and managing threats and errors encountered during flight as early as possible. This enhances safety and ultimately saves lives.

The course methodology has been developed on a threat and error management model and based on the findings of a long-running research project on airline crew performance by the University of Texas. This work has identified and defined principles that help achieve successful outcomes in managing threats and errors encountered during aircraft operation.

The course will be offered to check and training pilots and flight instructors at key locations around Australia through travelling workshops. This will give the greatest opportunity to spread the knowledge throughout all forms of aviation.
