New centre provides renewable energy skills in SA

A new training centre specialising in giving tradespeople the skills to install renewable energy systems has opened in Adelaide.

The Renewable Energy Centre will showcase a range of skills and technologies for the renewable, sustainable and demand-side energy management industry.

$141,000 in state and federal funds has enabled TAFE SA to furnish a dedicated site for the delivery of renewable energy studies, offering training in the design and installation of wind generation, solar panel and grid-connected systems and the conducting of energy audits.

A crucial part of the centre design is the provision of roof access for students so they can train directly with state-of-the-art photovoltaic solar and wind generation equipment.

The fully-equipped centre will enable TAFE SA to become the first registered training organisation in the state to deliver the newly developed national diploma-level qualification in renewable energy. It will provide significant training opportunities for both industry personnel and those with a general interest in the renewable and sustainable energy fields.

Among other things, this will help meet growing customer demand to have solar systems installed by accredited electricians.

The centre has 100 students enrolled this semester to undertake modules in Certificate IV in Renewable Energy, with the full qualification to be delivered from next year. A complete suite of qualifications in renewable and sustainable energy will be offered by 2009, once the Commonwealth approves a new electrotechnology training package.

The Business Council of Sustainable Energy is predicting significant growth in employment in the photovoltaic industry in the immediate future.

It is anticipated that the centre, once fully operational, will be able to contribute power back into the national electricity grid.
