National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work declared
The National Code of Practice for Induction for Construction Work has been declared by the Australian Safety and Compensation Council. It is part of a package of occupational health and safety material in support of the National Standard for Construction Work.
The code of practice will benefit the Australian economy as once implemented, it will replace the numerous state systems currently in operation with a single national approach.
Induction training provides health and safety benefits for both the general construction (commercial and civil) and residential construction sectors. The construction industry involves people, often sub-contractors, working in dynamic and ever changing environments. Hazards and risks change frequently on a site as construction work progresses and as workers move from project to project.
The code provides guidance on the recommended induction training required to ensure construction workers gain awareness and understanding of common hazards on construction sites and how they should be managed. It is relevant for all people involved in construction work.
Adoption of this code of practice by all Australian governments will reduce inconsistency and confusion for employers and workers in the construction industry. It will reduce the regulatory burden for employers by having the one set of arrangements throughout Australia.
The code is supported by a competency unit that will be included within the construction training package, enabling delivery by the vocational education and training sector.
