Initiatives launched to raise profile of skills training
The Institute for Trade Skills Excellence has launched a number of new initiatives to address the shortage of skilled tradespeople in Australia and elevate the status of traditional skilled trades as a career choice.
The Institute, funded by the Australian government but led by three industry groups (the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Australian Industry Group and the National Farmers Federation), has been established to promote and advance learning, teaching and training in Australian trades education.
Announced on July 26 by the Minister for Vocational and Further Education, the Hon. Andrew Robb AO MP, the initiatives include the creation of the SkillsOne brand and the establishment of a trade training provider excellence scheme.
Central to developing the SkillsOne brand has been the establishment of SkillsOne Television and the SkillsOne website (www.skillsone.com.au). For more information on SkillsOne, read the Training Packages @ Work article at www.tpatwork.com/ViewArticle.asp?hArticle=2698
The provider excellence scheme will work on a voluntary basis with registered training organisations assessed and evaluated against three star rating levels. The program aims to recognise excellence in trade skills training and advance the quality and relevance of training.
Other Institute initiatives announced include:
- the establishment of the Trade Teacher of the Year Award - for more information on the awards, read the article in this edition of Training Packages @ Work at www.tpatwork.com/ViewArticle.asp?articleid=2699
- the launch of an employer campaign that will work with key employer groups to improve the uptake and ensure completion of on the job training.
