SkillsMatch - a national ICT skills monitoring system
Twenty nine leading information technology recruitment companies are now delivering data to the Information Technology Contract and Recruitment Association's (ITCRA) national ICT skills monitoring system, SkillsMatch. SkillsMatch allows immediate access to real-time data on the supply of and demand for skilled information technology workers and related key workforce issues.
SkillsMatch is able to generate reports on more than 40 ICT labour force indicators, covering all states and territories proportionally and aligning with the new Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations. The first reporting period will be the last quarter of 2007.
Participating companies provide data on open positions, salaries offered, applications received, placements made and time-to-fill to a central SkillsMatch database. Using this data, government departments are able to access information for up to date forecasting of information technology skills demand, employment market balance, project costing, training and immigration needs.
SkillsMatch has been established with the support of the Australian Government through the Information Technology Online Program of the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts, and the Victorian Government through Multimedia Victoria. The Queensland Government's Information Industry Bureau is currently acquiring the data for a trial period to assess whether it will become a stakeholder in the system.
SkillsMatch is the first step in a strategic approach to ensuring that Australia can readily identify the skill needs of the information technology industry, and provides relevant information to professionals looking for employment opportunities. It breaks new ground because it is based on real jobs and placements. Surveys or counts of vacancy advertisements may be understated because of word-of-mouth placements.
With seven more ITCRA member companies currently modifying their processes to join SkillsMatch, it is expected that more than 50% of the ICT job market will be covered by July 2007.
