Harmonising Licensing Month - highlighting occupational licensing

Approaches to occupational licenses can vary between jurisdictions. This means that there is not always a seamless movement between jurisdictions by workers in licensed occupations. Not only can this be frustrating for workers, it can also impede responsiveness to skills shortages and natural disasters.

The harmonisation of occupational licensing with the vocational education and training system will enable workers in licensed occupations to move more freely between jurisdictions. In many cases it will also reduce the requirement for workers to undergo dual training and licensing assessments.

The Council of Australian Governments has focused the spotlight on occupational licensing, agreeing in February that full mutual recognition of occupational licences across Australia is to be achieved by 31 December 2008. This is a challenging deadline. It requires the commitment and cooperation of each stakeholder.

Licensing Line News has organised seminars in Brisbane this August which will focus on changes to licensing regimes and fostering communication between licensing and training stakeholders. Why not hold your own Harmonising Licensing event to discuss these important issues and how they can be sucessfully implemented?
