Delivering national teacher training and registration standards

Delivering national teacher trainingStudents, families and school communities across Australia will benefit from the introduction of national teacher training and registration standards announced as part of the 2007-08 Federal Budget.

Teacher quality is critical in determining educational outcomes for students. By developing nationally consistent standards in teacher training and registration, the quality of education delivered to school students throughout Australia can be significantly improved.

The Australian Government is providing $5 million over two years for the Realising Our PotentialĀ - national teacher training and registration standards initiative. State and territory teacher registration bodies, deans of education, representatives of the teaching profession, including Teaching Australia, and other stakeholders will all be consulted to develop the national framework.

National teacher training and registration standards will ensure that all teachers are equipped with the sameĀ skills and knowledge to perform effectively in the classroom, especially in the critical areas of literacy and numeracy.

The adoption of the national teacher training and registration standards will be a condition of Australian Government funding under the next schools funding agreement.
