Border no longer a taxi hassle for Coolangatta-Tweed

Taxis are now able to take cross-border fares in the Coolangatta-Tweed region under recently passed Queensland legislation.

Previously, Gold Coast and Tweed taxi drivers crossing state boundaries were prevented from returning to their home state with a fare paying passenger.

The changes clear the way for dual cab ranks on the Gold Coast and at Tweed Heads.

Queensland taxis will be able to pick up passengers at designated ranks to bring them back over the border, and New South Wales taxis can reciprocate by taking passengers to New South Wales from approved ranks on the Coolangatta side.

Designated dual ranks will be set up in places of high demand for cross border fares, such as Coolangatta Airport in Queensland and Southern Cross University in New South Wales.

The reforms are part of a historic agreement between Queensland and New South Wales to strip away legal barriers which restrict transport and trade between the two states. They are designed to protect the viability of the taxi industry and deliver better taxi transport for passengers, particularly in the southern Gold Coast and north Tweed region.

The new Queensland amendments will be matched by New South Wales and be in force by June 30.

Also included in the legislation is the introduction of a $2 late-night security levy on taxi fares in Queensland's major centres to fund secure taxi ranks.
