SA takes national lead in bio-security training

A new state of the art training facility puts South Australia in the national forefront of training in bio-security and the control of biological risks.

The significantly upgraded Veterinary and Applied Science Centre at Gilles Plains TAFE is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled technicians in biotechnology as well as veterinary nursing.

Science and technology graduates from South Australia's three universities often go on to high level roles in commercialisation, intellectual property and management. There is therefore potential high demand for skilled technicians to support commercialisation and research in biotechnology laboratories.

In an Australian first, the Veterinary and Applied Science Centre will feature the only dedicated teaching laboratory equipped to train students in biotechnology protocols and the assessment and control of biological risks. It is the first teaching laboratory in the nation designed for this high level of security work.

The centre will also make full-time veterinary nursing training available in South Australia for the first time to meet growing skill needs in the veterinary and animal industry sectors.

The upgraded facility allows TAFE SA to offer new courses including diplomas in Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology or Biological and Environmental Testing) and a full-time Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.
