Improved training scheme for builders in NSW

A package of reforms has been announced to enhance the ongoing training and education of New South Wales' 25,000 home and pool builders.

The reforms, to be introduced later this year in consultation with industry, will improve the relevance, access and quality of training and education programs builders are required to undertake to maintain their licence.

Continuing professional development was intially introduced to the New South Wales home building industry in March 2004 to help home and swimming pool builders maintain their skills in a rapidly changing environment. During a recent review of building licensing, it was clear builders wanted more input into the requirements, delivery and enforcement of continuing professional development.

The reforms, including a simplified points accrual system, will improve outcomes and simplify the program for builders. The Master Builders Association has welcomed the proposed reforms to continued professional development.

Work will also commence later in the year on rewriting the Home Building Act 1989 to consolidate recent amendments, as well as making it simpler to understand.
