Funding boost to keep Queensland fishermen safe

Queensland's commercial fishing industry will benefit from a $30,000 investment into research to find ways to improve maritime safety practices.

The research aims to identify world's best marine safety practices and develop ways to apply this knowledge for the benefit of the industry. The joint Queensland Seafood Industry Association and Maritime Safety Queensland project will allow a dedicated researcher to undertake the analysis of practices that could be introduced in Queensland.

With the cooperation of the industry, the Queensland Seafood Industry Association has the ability to use this research practically by delivering a suite of safety reforms that will help set new standards of on-board safety.

The Queensland fishing industry has already demonstrated a willingness to provide a safer work environment by participating in a pilot program trialling the full time wearing of life jackets while working on board a fishing vessel.
