A launching pad into a child care career in Victoria
A group of 100 people, including parents, mature age and young people from Dandenong, Pakenham, Frankston and Traralgon are participating in a specially designed program, the Launch Pad project, to help place them in child care sector jobs.
The project has received $88,000 in Australian Government funding to help address labour shortages in the child care sector by providing a pool of skilled workers who have recieved classroom based and on the job training.
In February, five groups started their Certificate III in Children's Services. The group will undertake work experience in long day care, occasional care, out of school hours care, and kindergarten and pre-schools.
An important feature of the project is that each job-seeker will be assigned an employment adviser who organises work placement, mentors the participant and helps them to find work at the end of the training.
The project has a high degree of support from employers, who host participants during work placement so they can develop the skills they need to move easily into employment at the end of the training. The opportunity to develop strong employer-employee relationships gives people in the Launch Pad project the best opportunity of finding sustainable employment in the child care industry.
