New general safety induction training requirements in Queensland

Recent changes to workplace health and safety legislation in Queensland mean that people working in additional types of construction work are now required to hold a General Safety Induction (Construction Industry) Card (also known as a blue card).

Previously all people doing building work, housing construction, civil construction and demolition work needed an induction.

From 1 January 2007 people doing additional types of construction work such as fit outs, renovations, repairs or refurbishment and asbestos removal, must hold an induction before they start work.

A General Safety Induction (Construction Industry) Card is issued to a person who successfully completes the course 30215QLD - Course in General Safety Induction (Construction Industry), which is accredited under the Vocational Education, Training and Employment Act 2000.

People who need to complete the course include:

  • workers
  • employers
  • self-employed people

Examples include people involved in structural steel erection, carpentry, bricklaying, concreting, plumbing, electrical, painting, refurbishing, shopfitting, repairs, plastering, floor and wall tiling, roof tiling and the installation of floor coverings.

People doing repair work on fixed plant, ships or submarines do not have to complete the course.

Is interstate training recognised?

From 1 January 2007, health and safety induction training completed by construction workers in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland is mutually recognised in those states.

Interstate workers do not need to undertake additional construction induction training to work in Queensland if they hold a current:

  • Foundation for Safety Construction Industry Induction Training Agreement (red card) issued in Victoria
  • WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate for the Construction Industry issued in New South Wales.

However, the Queensland blue card excludes the prescribed activities of demolition work and asbestos removal work. Workers from Victoria holding a red card and workers from New South Wales holding a WorkCover Construction Induction Certificate will need to undertake additional training to obtain certificates to perform these activities in Queensland.
