Important information for Western Australian restaurant licensees

New Western Australian legislation that will allow restaurant licensees to serve liquor without a meal will come into effect in the first quarter of 2007.

However, licensees will have to apply for a permit to do so and ensure that the primary focus of their restaurant is the preparation of meals for consumption on the premises.

Conditions of the permit will include:

  • premises always being set up and presented for dining
  • tables are not to be moved or shifted to create dance floors
  • the kitchen must be open and operating and the full restaurant menu available
  • liquor may only be consumed by patrons while seated at a dining table
  • the sale and supply of liquor will be restricted to table service
  • the premises must not be promoted or advertised as anything other than a restaurant
