Control cable corrosion: CASA invites your comments

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority has published a new discussion paper about the internal corrosion of control cables in aircraft. Feedback is sought from the aviation community about this problem, which poses a risk to operators of general aviation aircraft more than 15 years old that utilise control cables made with SAE-AISI 3015e stainless steel.

This problem potentially affects over one third of the Australian general aviation fleet.

The discussion paper:

  • fully explores the issues surrounding the failure of control cables terminals
  • gauges the scope and extent of the problem
  • identifies the aircraft potentially at risk
  • outlines the options that the Civil Aviation Safety Authority could consider for regulatory and non-regulatory action to manage the risks arising from this issue
