Transitional industry specific licences for handling refrigerants

Under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995, all technicians who handle ozone depleting or synthetic greenhouse gas refrigerants (such as chlorofluorocarbons, hydrochlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons) must have a relevant Refrigerant Handling Licence.

Since this requirement was announced, some industries have identified a need for additional industry specific licensing to deal with the competencies unique to their sectors.

Discussions between the Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage and affected industries are continuing and a number of transitional industry specific licences have been developed as a transitional measure.

Workers in the maritime, aviation or transport refrigeration industries or those who recover refrigerant from equipment or decant refrigerant between cylinders, may be eligible for a transitional licence.
