New multi-crew pilot licence proposed
The Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority is proposing to introduce a multi-crew pilot licence for people to train specifically to become first officers in air transport operation. This is being considered to address failures in teamwork, a major contributing factor in airline accidents.
The year-long training for the new licence will develop multi-crew teamwork from an early stage. It will focus on flying skills for large aircraft, crew resource management and threat and error management.
Practical training will focus on large turbine-powered aircraft in a multi-crew environment, using a combination of aircraft and simulators.
New regulations will be required for the new licence. These will be determined following comprehensive consultation with relevant sectors of the aviation industry.
The new regulations will be consistent with the latest standards issued by the International Civil Aviation Organisation.
